8 June 2008 Musical photos are up. Curses, I'm tired, and David Tang was there too with his D300. 30 April 2008 Chemistry Olympiad over. I've got a bronze medal, so I'm happy enough. Athletics Carnival photos are up. Thumbnail style on sidebar. As usual, if you want specific photos, just ask me and I'll be happy enough to oblige. 15 February 2008 Photos from the Valentines Day Assembly up now. Low light, along with a half-functional Speedlite, meant that these photos are a lot noisier than I'd like them to be. Chemistry Olympiad study from here on, so chances are I won't be updating for a while. 14 February 2008 Another update: swimming carnival photos are up. I've noticed over the past couple of days that the best photos I've taken are the so-called "candid" shots. I don't mean candid in the traditional "ha-ha" sense; rather, that these shots aren't posed. It's hard for a human subject to maintain normal behaviour if he or she knows they are being photographed. A more natural facial expression almost always makes for a better portrait. The problem, at least with point-and-shoot digital cameras, is the shutter lag between pressing the shutter release and the photo actually being taken. On the Sony Cybershot I have here, it's about 1.5 seconds. That's enough time for anything to happen in between: someone getting in the way, the subject changing expression, the lighting to change, and so on. The one big advantage of the digital SLR is that this delay is practically minimal; close to zero for all practical purposes. (I think it's around 50ms, but that's sort of splitting hairs.) This time difference can make all the difference between getting that shot and missing it completely. 13 February 2008 Long time no see, this forsaken place. A lot has happened while I've left this place to languish. I have my new camera indeed, and it's the Canon 40D, just as I was looking for. Lenses include a 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS and a 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS (and hoping to add a 50mm f/1.4 in the next month or two). New Valentine's Day photos up, and much more stuff in this coming year, hopefully. My name's Norman Ma, and I'm 16 years old, and already possessing a strong passion for photography. It's never too young to start. Here is where I'll showcase many of the photos I've taken during the last few years of my existence. I use a Canon EOS 40D, and mainly a 17-85mm lens. Older photos have also been taken on an Olympus C-740 3.2 megapixel camera, which is definitely showing its age. Every now and again, I'll also have a commentary on a few things which I find interesting in relation to photography. All comments, criticism and suggestions are welcome. Hope you have a great time!
